One of the most coveted of all Bobby Orr cards from his playing days is the scarce 1966-67 Topps Test issue, believed to have been, like the rest of the 66-card set, distributed/available only in a small part of the United States. For the novices/uniformed, we can tell you that a lighter wood-grain border and English-only text on the back are the differences with Topps’ regular ’66-67 issue. The example of card #35 here features near-perfect cardboard and merited a lofty mark of NM-MT 8 at PSA, with an explanation for its (OC) qualifier not necessary when admiring the treasure. We’ve always loved how the write-up on Bobby’s rookie cards concludes, “A rushing defenceman who can set up goals as well as score them.” And how! With regards to another Howe, Gordie’s card #23 (EX-MT+ 6.5) and that of Bobby Hull (EX 5) are also in PSA holders and, with Orr, constitute the set’s top three cards. A NM 7 card of 65-John Ferguson is also present and then it’s on to the raw representatives. …..Appealing stuff indeed, although we’re able to spot a little something on just about all cards, with however just one quarter-inch wrinkle (38-Tom Williams) considered a crease in the whole stack. We would say EX-MT examples dominate, with a smaller percentage making it to EX-MT+ or NM, while some may be “only” EX or EX+. Four cards appear to be free of flaws and at least NM-MT; 10-Berenson, 41-Harris, 49-Pappin and 56-MacGregor. The latter, along with 13 others are similar to the Orr, with a white strip visible along one of their borders. Please see our website for more images – this is a sensational and tantalizing opportunity.
Also to mention are the four very light horizontal scratches in the holder of the Orr card, visible through Bobby’s hair, while a couple of light scratches affect the Hull holder, (in Bobby’s face). A couple of light subtle scratches affect the other two holders. …..For those curious of PSA numbers regarding the Orr test issue, 99 total examples had been examined by the company over the years when we went to press, with just one MINT 9, five NM-MT+ 8.5s and six NM-MT 8s, while the card here is one of eight 8s with qualifiers. Another 13 are NM 7s.
