Intriguing foursome of telegraphs sent to Canadiens idol Maurice Richard are dated January 9, 1954 and bring forth the story of how the Rocket was reprimanded by NHL president Clarence Campbell for defending, in his newspaper column, teammate Bernie Geoffrion after the latter had been suspended by Campbell. Richard brought forth the English-French factor and not long after the rhubarb ended his column, saying that Campbell, who forced him to apologize, had basically taken away his freedom of speech. One telegraph is from a senator Vincent Dupuis, while three others are from lawyers, offering their services to Richard should he need them. In French, they all congratulate Richard for his article, with one from Bathurst, New Brunswick saying that Acadians approve your courage, dont retract anything and continue to expose this dictator, and we remain solidaire with our friends in Quebec. Significant one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect the English-French tensions of the day are destined for an important Maurice Richard collection.
