Jacques Plante Auction March 2006
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/28/2006
Magnificent shimmering trophy commemorates Jacques Plante’s first Stanley Cup title with the Montreal Canadiens as a rookie in the spring of 1953. The young netminder got into three regular season games and then showed more flashes of brilliance in four playoff games. Habs coach Dick Irvin called on the young netminder to replace Gerry McNeil after Montreal fell behind 3-2 in their semi-final series with Chicago. Plante blanked the Hawks 3-0 and the Canadiens then won game seven, before taking care of the Bruins in a 5-game final, Elmer Lach scoring the Cup-clincher in a 1-0 overtime victory. Outstanding goaltending and a solid defence, led by Bouchard, Harvey and Johnson, were the keys to the Habs’ triumph. This miniature Stanley Cup trophy features the names of Montreal’s hockey heroes engraved in two columns on the barrel, below the names of the team’s executives, including general manager Frank Selke. Produced recently by “Boffey” at the request of the Jacques Plante Foundation in Switzerland, where Jacques spent his later years, the marvelous keepsake is in pristine condition and recalls the dawning of a legendary career. A letter of authenticity from the Plante family will be included.
