Intriguing scarcities from Western Canada are on the auction block here, with the encapsulated collectibles bringing forth multiple aspects to point out. For starters, although labeled “1923” by PSA, hobby historian and author of two “Vintage Hockey Collector” books, Bobby Burrell informs that these examples are from the second year of the Crescent promotion, 1924-25. The PSA Population report confirms the rarity of the Crescent issues, while the grading firm’s Set Registry lists this ensemble as the Second Current Finest 1923-24 Crescent Selkirks Set. The condition leader is #7-Cecil Browne at EX 5. It’s a Pop 2 with just one EX+ 5.5 edging it, while just two EX-MT 6s (all players/cards combined) are on record and just eight EX 5s. One card here is a Pop 2 with none higher; 8-Jack Connelly (GOOD 2), with 3-Pete Speirs (VG 3) also noteworthy. Also contributing are five at GOOD 2 and three graded PR 1, with a trimmed 11-Connie Johanneson slabbed “Authentic”. Not present are 10-Ward Turvey and the key 9-Charlie Gardiner card, along with the rare #6, thought by some to have never been issued. The future legendary Black Hawks goalie, Gardiner only played for the Selkirk Fishermen in 1924-25, helping to date the issue.
*The backs of the cards, (with the cards coming in bricks of ice cream), include an offer for a free brick for a complete 14-card set, redeemable at the Crescent plant, while three sets would earn a boy “a first-class hockey stick.” Like several promotions of the day, one card, #6 in this case, was short-printed as to limit the number of prizes awarded – there mustn’t have been many, if any, sticks given away!
