Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2021
Striking colors and a wonderful depiction of one of hockey's first mega-stars are featured here, with the colorful Fred Taylor sporting his Renfrew turtleneck sweater in his mid-twenties. The object of several bidding wars, Taylor was lured to Renfrew by big bucks, with the team becoming known as the "Millionaires." A scoring machine wherever he wowed fans, (194 goals in 186 league games), Taylor earned his "Cyclone" nickname for his speed and furious rushes with the Ottawa Senators, winning Stanley Cups in Ottawa (1909) and Vancouver (1915). Cyclone’s contract with Renfrew for the NHA’s inaugural season (1909-10) was said to be worth $5250 for the 12-game schedule, while baseball star Ty Cobb earned $6500 with Detroit to play 154 games!
Light scratches to the SGC holder are to be aware of, with the grading firm giving an EX 5 assessment to one of the keys in Imperial Tobacco's coveted 1911-12 C55 set.
