Amazing and historic medal, presented to goaltender Tom Paton, a member of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association Hockey Club, winners of the AHAC Championship in 1888. Organized in 1884, the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association Hockey Club was a founding member of the Montreal-based Amateur Hockey Association of Canada in 1886. The team was a powerhouse and held the AHAC title from 1888 until 1894. Winning the Stanley Cup during its inaugural season in 1893, the MAAA would repeat as Stanley Cup Champions again in 1894, and then two more times as the top CAHL team 1901 and 1902. The award is in solid silver with gold-plate crossed hockey sticks and a square puck (square wooden pucks were used in these earliest games) on the lowest portion of the four-section medal. The top piece has a pin back and is engraved with VSC signifying the Victoria Skating Club, another of the top amateur hockey teams in Canada in the 1880s and the host of the 1888 AHAC Championship tournament held at Montreals famous Victoria Arena. Below, another silver shield with the year 1888 and with a pair of vintage crossed skates attached by silver links. In excellent condition for its age... 120 years old! Although this medal is unnamed, it came with a group of seven other medals, all named to Tom Paton. An immensely important medal, awarded to the goaltender of record who would play on the very first Stanley Cup Championship team in 1893.
