Organized in 1884, the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association Hockey Club was a founding member of the Montreal-based Amateur Hockey Association of Canada in 1886. The team was a powerhouse and held the Amateur Hockey Association title from 1888 until 1894. Winning the Stanley Cup during its inaugural season in 1893, the club would repeat as Stanley Cup Champions again in 1894, and then two more times as the top CAHL team 1901 and 1902. This astonishing find dates to 1888 and captures the squad in a studio setting with all identified in white ink: G.S. Lowe, A.A. Hodgson, J. Stewart, J. Virtue, A. Cameron and T.L. Paton, the goalie. A raised plaque at the bottom proclaims M.A.A.A. Hockey Team Champions, 1888. Apart from a barely-noticeable scratch running across the lower portion of the image, the photograph is in excellent condition with a few very small areas of water staining along the bottom edge of the matting. The photo measures10.5 x 13.5 inches and the entire display, including frame, is 17 x 19 inches in size.
