Goalie Tom Paton would go on to lead the team to the first Stanley Cup in 1893. Founded in 1884 by R. F. Smith, the historic MAAA Hockey Club took part in its first championship tournament the following year when Smith entered the team in the 1885 Montreal Winter Carnival tournament. The MAAA beat out stiff competition from the McGill, Crystals, Victorias, Montreal Football Club and Ottawa hockey clubs to claim its first of many championship titles. The MAAA would repeat as Winter Carnival champs again in 1887, followed by Amateur Hockey Association of Canada (AHAC) championships every year from 1888 through 1892, proving their worth as the top amateur team in the nation. In 1893, after winning the AHAC title once more, the team was awarded the Stanley Cup in its inaugural presentation.
